The California Spangled is an experimental breed of domestic cat created by Paul Casey to resemble wild leopards, with only around 200 individuals recorded as of 2003. Despite its wild appearance, it is a fully domestic animal with a specific genetic history involving Siamese, Angora, and Abyssinian lines.
The breed was created for conservation
Paul Casey conceived the California Spangled after a conversation with anthropologist Louis Leakey regarding leopard poaching. The goal was to create a domestic cat that looked like a leopard so that people would be more likely to support conservation efforts for the wild animals. Casey began the breeding program by crossing a female Traditional Siamese with a Turkish Angora, then expanded the gene pool to include British Shorthairs, American Shorthairs, Manx, and Abyssinians. Later, domestic cats from Malaya and Egypt were added to refine the wild look. By 1985, the breed's appearance was established enough to form the California Spangled Cat Association.
Recognition status remains experimental
The breed has not achieved full championship status in major cat registries but holds experimental recognition with the American Cat Association (ACA) and The International Cat Association (TICA). In 1994, a California Spangled won best in show at a fancier competition in Paris, proving the breed's viability in the show ring despite its experimental classification. The breed's numbers have remained low; while Casey advertised the cats in the Neiman-Marcus catalog to generate interest, the high price and the controversial nature of selling animals in a fashion catalog limited rapid population growth. Most cats were sold to private owners rather than being kept for breeding, which slowed the expansion of the gene pool.
Appearance mimics wild felids
The defining characteristic of the California Spangled is its coat, which features well-defined spots that resemble those of a leopard or cheetah. The spots can take various shapes including round, square, triangular, and oval, but eyelet, fish scale, and crescent spots are disallowed by the breed standard. The body must show significant musculature to reflect the wild ancestry. The breed's markings are distinct from the random spotting of a tabby; the spots are usually solid and well-spaced, creating a pattern that is unmistakably wild-looking while remaining within the domestic cat species.
Tabby patterns are a separate genetic category
While the California Spangled has spots, it is important to distinguish this from the spotted tabby pattern found in many other cats. A tabby is not a breed but a coat pattern characterized by an M-shaped marking on the forehead and stripes on the legs, tail, and cheeks. There are four distinct tabby patterns: mackerel, classic, ticked, and spotted. The spotted tabby is thought to result from a modifier gene that breaks up the stripes of a mackerel tabby, creating spots. Unlike the California Spangled, where the spot pattern is the breed standard, a spotted tabby can appear in random-bred populations and various specific breeds like the Bengal or Egyptian Mau.
Genetics determine the coat pattern
The tabby pattern is controlled by two distinct gene loci: the agouti gene and the tabby locus, along with a spotted modifier. The agouti gene determines whether the tabby pattern is expressed at all; the dominant allele allows the pattern to show, while the recessive allele results in a solid color that may hide the pattern. The tabby locus has three alleles: mackerel (Tm), classic (Tb), and ticked (Ta). The ticked allele is dominant over the others, effectively masking the striped or blotched patterns to create a salt-and-pepper appearance. The spotted gene is a separate locus that breaks the lines of a mackerel tabby, creating spots. This genetic complexity explains why a cat can have spots without being a California Spangled, as the same visual result can be achieved through different genetic combinations.
Behavior varies by sex more than coat
Personality in cats is influenced by multiple genetic and environmental factors, but coat color and pattern have little impact on behavior. A 2015 study from the University of California, Davis, analyzed over 1,200 surveys and found that while aggressive behaviors varied slightly between coat colors, the differences were minor. The study concluded that sex-linked factors were a much stronger predictor of behavior than coat pattern. For instance, females were identified as more aggressive during veterinary visits compared to males, regardless of whether they were tabbies, solid-colored, or spotted. Perceptions of personality often align with owner bias, such as viewing orange cats as friendly, rather than actual behavioral differences tied to the genes that create the coat.
