If a dog has consumed grapes or raisins, immediate veterinary care is the only course of action. Emesis, or the induction of vomiting, is generally recommended if the ingestion occurred within the past two hours. A veterinarian may use an emetic such as apomorphine to expel the contents. Activated charcoal may be administered to adsorb any remaining toxins in the gastrointestinal tract.

Intravenous fluid therapy is the cornerstone of treatment during the first 48 hours. This induces diuresis to help prevent acute kidney failure. Antiemetics treat vomiting, while H2 receptor antagonists protect the stomach from uremic gastritis, which is damage caused by increased BUN levels. Blood parameters including BUN, creatinine, calcium, phosphorus, sodium, and potassium must be monitored closely.

In cases where anuria develops, dialysis (hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis) can support the kidneys. The toxicity of grapes and raisins is specific to dogs. Among pet animals, the domestic cat is a relative, yet it is disputed whether grapes are toxic to them.
