This mechanism is what causes the characteristic eye shine or "eyeshine" when a flashlight hits a dog's eyes in the dark. It effectively amplifies available light, allowing them to navigate spaces that appear pitch black to humans.
More rods, fewer cones
Dog retinas are dominated by rod cells, which are highly sensitive to light intensity and motion, whereas cone cells, which detect color and fine detail, are far less numerous. Humans have a mix that favors daylight vision and color discrimination, while dogs have a visual system tuned for the crepuscular hours of dawn and dusk. This trade-off means they sacrifice color vision and sharpness for the ability to detect movement in shadows. A dog can spot a squirrel rustling in the underbrush at night long before a human can, but the image will be blurrier and largely monochromatic.

When visual information is insufficient, dogs rely heavily on their other senses to construct a mental map of their environment. Their sense of smell is exponentially more powerful than a human's, allowing them to navigate by scent trails even when they cannot see the source. When to worry about night vision
A sudden inability to navigate in low light can indicate health issues, particularly in older dogs. Conditions like cataracts, which cloud the lens, or progressive retinal atrophy, which causes the retina to degenerate, can severely impair night vision. If a dog that previously moved confidently in the dark begins bumping into furniture or hesitating on stairs, it is a sign that their visual processing is failing. Unlike humans, dogs rarely squint or complain about poor vision, so behavioral changes are often the only warning sign that a veterinary check is needed.
