The Cornish Rex is the only cat breed that lacks guard hairs and awn hairs, possessing only the fine undercoat. This unique genetic makeup, caused by a specific mutation in the LPAR6 gene, results in a coat that is soft, curly, and offers little insulation against cold.

The absence of the outer protective layer means the breed is highly sensitive to low temperatures and is best suited for indoor living in warm, dry conditions. While often marketed as hypoallergenic, the reality is more complex: they produce the same allergenic protein as other cats, though their reduced shedding may result in fewer airborne particles for some owners.

Genetics define the coat structure

The defining feature of the Cornish Rex is not just the curl, but the total absence of the outer coat layers found in almost all other felines. Most cats have three types of hair: guard hairs for protection, awn hairs as a middle layer, and the fine undercoat. The Cornish Rex has only the undercoat, which is about 1 cm long and naturally curly.

This structural difference stems from a mutation identified in 2013 on chromosome A1. Researchers found a 4 base pair deletion in the lysophosphatidic acid receptor 6 (LPAR6) gene. This deletion creates a premature stop codon, preventing the receptor from maintaining the structural integrity of the hair shaft. In humans, similar mutations cause ectodermal dysplasia, a condition characterized by woolly hair. The result is a coat that is extremely fine and lacks the rigidity of guard hairs.

Appearance and physical traits

The breed is often called the "Greyhound of the cats" due to its sleek, slender build and a distinctive galloping run. The body is muscular but slender, with small paws, a long tail, and a wedge-shaped head. The ears are large, wide at the base, and rounded at the tips, resembling mussel shells. Their eyes are medium-sized, oval, and can be any color, while the coat color is irrelevant to the breed standard, allowing for any variety.

It is crucial to distinguish the Cornish Rex from the Devon Rex, which looks similar but possesses shortened guard hairs and sheds. The Cornish Rex lacks guard hairs altogether. While the Devon Rex mutation is different, both breeds result from separate genetic events where the hair follicles become oval rather than round, causing the hair to curl as it grows.

Origin and history

The breed originated in Cornwall, Great Britain, from a spontaneous genetic mutation in the 1950s. A litter of kittens was born on a farm, and one cream-colored male named Kallibunker exhibited the unusual fine, curly coat. He was the first Cornish Rex. His owner backcrossed him to his mother, producing two more curly-coated kittens, including a male named Poldhu.

Poldhu sired a female named Lamorna Cove, who was later transported to America. There, she was crossed with a Siamese, a breeding decision that contributed to the breed's long, whippy tails and large ears. The breed was formally recognized in 1950, though the British and American versions developed slightly different standards, leading to the occasional distinction of "American Cornish Rex."

Allergies and the "hypoallergenic" myth

The Cornish Rex is frequently described as hypoallergenic, but this is a misconception. Allergic reactions to cats are triggered by a glycoprotein called Fel d 1, which is produced in the sebaceous glands of the skin, saliva, and urine, not by the hair itself. When a cat grooms, the saliva dries and becomes dust that people inhale.

Since Cornish Rex cats groom as much as, or even more than, other breeds, they produce the same amount of Fel d 1. However, because they shed significantly less dander and hair into the environment, they may cause lesser reactions in some allergic individuals. They are not non-allergenic, but their lack of a heavy topcoat and reduced shedding can make them a more manageable option for some people with sensitivities.

Environmental needs

The lack of guard hairs and undercoat density means the Cornish Rex has poor thermal regulation. They are sensitive to low temperatures and require a warm environment. In cold climates, they often need sweaters or heated beds to maintain comfort. Their coat is best suited for indoor living where the temperature is controlled, protecting them from the elements that their ancestors would have faced in the wild.
