The M-mark is the universal identifier

Every tabby cat displays a distinctive M-shaped marking on its forehead, along with dark lines extending from the eyes and stripes on the cheeks, legs, and tail. These markings are not random; they are a genetic inheritance from the domestic cat's direct ancestor, the African wildcat, which shares the same coat pattern. The term "tabby" itself dates back to the 17th century, originally referring to striped silk taffeta from the Attabiya district of Baghdad, before being applied to cats with similar striped coats in the 1690s.

Four distinct genetic patterns exist

Female orange tabbies are rare and typically carry the gene on one X chromosome, often resulting in tortoiseshell or calico patterns when paired with black patches. These cats always show tabby patterning, though the stripes can appear muted in cream or blue-cream varieties due to pigment dilution.

Coat does not dictate personality

Despite popular belief, a cat's tabby pattern does not determine its temperament.
