The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a large, muscular hound originally bred in Southern Africa to bay lions, distinguished by a unique ridge of hair growing in reverse along its spine. This breed combines the courage of indigenous Khoikhoi dogs with European hunting breeds, resulting in a loyal but sensitive animal that requires experienced handling.

History and the Lion-Hunting Role

The breed's origins trace back to the ridged hunting and guardian dogs of the Khoikhoi people, who were described by Europeans in the mid-17th century as absolutely fearless and ferocious guards. These indigenous dogs, standing about 18 inches at the withers, possessed a distinctive reverse hair growth that early colonists found valuable. By the early 1800s, European settlers had imported breeds like Greyhounds, Mastiffs, Great Danes, and Bloodhounds to interbreed with the local dogs, creating the Boer hunting dogs that form the breed's foundation.

Genetic analysis confirms that the Rhodesian Ridgeback and the Great Dane fall within the same genetic clade, implying a major contribution from the Dane, while ancient genome sequencing indicates the breed retains about 4% pre-colonial ancestry. The modern breed was solidified by Reverend Charles Helm, who brought two ridged bitches to the Hope Fountain Mission in 1879, and Cornelius van Rooyen, a big-game hunter who bred them with his own dogs to create a stock capable of baying lions without attacking them outright.

These dogs were designed to harass lions by darting in and out with quick snaps, confusing the animal until the hunter could shoot it. They also hunted boars and cleared farmlands of wild pigs and baboons, with the ability to kill a baboon independently. The first breed standard was drafted by F.R. Barnes in 1922 in Bulawayo, approved by the South African Kennel Union in 1927, and eventually recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1955 as a member of the hound group.

Genetics of the Reverse Ridge

The breed's defining feature is a ridge of hair running along the back in the opposite direction from the rest of the coat, consisting of a fan-like area formed by two whorls called crowns. This ridge is typically about 2 inches wide at its widest point and tapers from behind the shoulders to the hips. The genetic mutation responsible for this trait was identified in 2007 by researchers at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and the Broad Institute.

The ridge mutation is autosomal dominant with near-complete penetrance, meaning 95% of heterozygous dogs (carrying one copy of the gene) display a ridged back. The only disqualification in the AKC standard is ridgelessness, which occurs in purebred offspring of heterozygous parents that fail to inherit the mutation. While well under 25% of puppies lack a ridge, a significant proportion of the breed are homozygous for the mutation. A genetic test is available to distinguish between homozygous and heterozygous dogs, allowing breeders to predict the birth of ridgeless puppies.

Temperament and Training Needs

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are known for being loyal and intelligent, but they are typically somewhat aloof to strangers. This aloofness is not aggression; a dog with a good temperament will not attack a stranger without a reason. However, because they require consistent training and correct socialization, they are often not the best choice for inexperienced dog owners or families with young children.

Despite their imposing appearance and athleticism, these dogs have a sensitive side. Francis R. Barnes, who wrote the first standard, noted that rough treatment should never be administered, especially to young dogs, as they "go to pieces with handling of that kind." They accept correction only if it is fair, justified, and delivered by someone they know and trust.

Critical Health Considerations

The breed is prone to several specific health conditions, with hip dysplasia and dermoid sinus being the most notable. The Rhodesian Ridgeback ranks sixth among breeds for thyroid problems recorded by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, and a UK study found the average life expectancy to be 12 years. They are also susceptible to degenerative myelopathy, caused by an autosomal recessive mutation in the SOD1 gene, and gastric dilatation volvulus, commonly known as bloat, which is a potentially fatal emergency for deep-chested breeds.

Dermoid sinus is a congenital neural-tube defect affecting the breed, often likened to a thin "spaghetti strand" beneath the skin. It is estimated that 8-10% of Swedish Ridgebacks and slightly less than 5% of US Ridgebacks are affected. Puppies should be screened at birth by palpating the subcutaneous dorsal midline from the skull to the tail. While surgical removal is an option, all affected dogs should be spayed or neutered to prevent the risk of abscesses, meningitis, or death. Interestingly, supplementation of folic acid to the brood bitch before mating and during pregnancy has been shown to reduce the incidence of this condition.

Physical Standards and Culling Ethics

Males typically stand 26 to 29 inches at the withers and weigh about 45 kg, while females are 24 to 26 inches tall and weigh about 38 kg. They possess a short, dense, sleek, and glossy coat in light wheaten to red wheaten colors, with white acceptable only on the chest and toes. The nose should be black or liver, with amber eyes accompanying a brown nose and dark eyes accompanying a black nose.

Historically, many ridgeless puppies were culled at birth, a practice that was once part of the breed's code of ethics. Following public scrutiny, the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of Great Britain reversed its stance to state that no healthy puppy will be culled. Contemporary breeders increasingly opt for surgical sterilization of ridgeless offspring to ensure they live as non-breeding pets, preserving the genetic diversity while maintaining the breed standard for showing.
