Look for tiny black specks that turn red when wet, live fleas jumping in the fur, and intense scratching. These signs indicate an infestation that requires immediate action because the fleas are only the visible tip of a much larger problem.

The most reliable indicator is not the insect itself, which is small and fast, but the evidence of its feeding. Flea dirt consists of digested blood that looks like black pepper or soot. When you comb this onto a white paper towel and add a drop of water, it dissolves into a reddish-brown stain, confirming the presence of blood and distinguishing it from ordinary dirt or dander.

Physical evidence on the skin

Fleas are wingless insects that are compressed laterally, allowing them to slip easily between the hairs of a host. They are typically 1–2 mm long and reddish-brown, though gravid females may appear banded as their abdomens swell with eggs. Because they are so thin and flat, they can be difficult to spot even on a white coat, moving with a speed that makes them appear as a blur rather than a distinct insect.

The dog flea (Ctenocephalides canis) and the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) are the primary culprits, with over 90% of fleas found on both species being the cat flea. While they look similar, the cat flea has a longer head compared to the dog flea, which has a more rounded head. Both species have spines and hairs that help them travel through dense fur, and their long hind legs allow them to jump to a new host within seconds of detecting warmth or carbon dioxide.

Allergic reactions and skin damage

Most owners notice a change in behavior before they see the insect. A dog or cat with a flea infestation will scratch, bite, and lick itself incessantly, particularly around the head, neck, and base of the tail. This is not just annoyance; for many animals, it is a reaction to an allergy. Flea saliva contains 15 substances that can trigger flea allergy dermatitis, causing severe itching even with a small number of bites.

When an animal is allergic, the scratching becomes compulsive. This leads to hair loss, bald spots, and "hot spots" where the skin becomes red, inflamed, and infected. In severe cases, the skin may develop a foul odor due to secondary bacterial infections. The skin may also bleed, and the constant trauma from biting can cause significant distress and sleeplessness for the pet.

Systemic health risks

While the itching is the most obvious sign, the physiological impact can be more dangerous. A severe infestation can lead to anemia, particularly in young or small animals, as the fleas consume enough blood to cause a dangerous drop in red blood cell count. Dehydration is also a risk for small animals with large numbers of fleas feeding on them.

Beyond blood loss, fleas are vectors for other diseases. They can transmit the tapeworm Dipylidium caninum when a pet swallows an immature flea during grooming. They are also associated with the transmission of Bartonella, murine typhus, and potentially Lyme disease, though their ability to transmit the latter is not fully confirmed. In extreme cases, fleas have been suspected as transmission agents for plague, although they do not transmit Yersinia pestis directly.

Why you might not see the fleas

It is common to suspect fleas but fail to see them, and this is often because of the flea's life cycle. Only about 5% of the flea population exists as adults on the host at any given time. The other 95% are in the environment: 50% are eggs, 35% are larvae, and 10% are pupae.

Flea eggs are non-adhesive and fall off the host within hours, scattering into carpets, bedding, and cracks in the floor. The larvae are grub-like, avoiding light and hiding in the substrate where they feed on dried blood feces from adults. Because the majority of the population is hidden in the environment, treating the pet alone is rarely sufficient. Successful eradication requires treating the host's entire environment, including vacuuming thoroughly to remove eggs and washing linens in hot water.

When to see a vet

If you see the red-brown stain from flea dirt, or if your pet is scratching to the point of skin damage, a veterinary visit is warranted. A vet can confirm the diagnosis and prescribe appropriate treatments, as over-the-counter insecticides are not always effective due to resistance. Fleas have developed resistance to many common insecticides, including carbamates and pyrethroids, and larvae can be even more resistant than adults.

Immediate action is necessary because a single female flea can produce 20 to 30 eggs per day, leading to a rapid population explosion. Without treating the environment and the pet simultaneously, the infestation will persist, and the risk of disease transmission or severe anemia increases with every passing day.
