The cat righting reflex is an innate ability to orient and land on feet, appearing at 3–4 weeks and perfected by 6–9 weeks. This feat relies on a flexible backbone and the ability to twist the front and rear halves of the body in opposite directions to conserve angular momentum.

How the physics actually works

Cats do not violate the law of conservation of angular momentum; they work around it by changing their shape. Because they lack a functional collarbone and have an unusually flexible spine, they can bend their body in the middle so the front half rotates on a different axis than the rear half.

The mechanism involves a precise sequence of movements. First, the cat tucks its front legs in to reduce the moment of inertia of the front half, while extending its rear legs to increase the moment of inertia of the rear half. This allows the front to rotate as much as 90° while the rear rotates in the opposite direction by only about 10°. In the second phase, the cat extends its front legs and tucks its rear legs, allowing the rear half to rotate further while the front rotates less. Depending on the cat's flexibility and initial momentum, these steps may be repeated to complete the full 180° turn.

Development and anatomy

The reflex is not present at birth. It begins to appear at 3–4 weeks of age and is fully perfected between 6 and 9 weeks. The tail is often assumed to be the primary tool for this maneuver, but cats without tails can perform the righting reflex just as effectively. The tail helps, but the actual turning is driven by the legs and the twisting of the spine.

This ability is not unique to cats. Similar mid-air righting capabilities have been observed in other small vertebrates, including rabbits, rats, and lizards, as well as certain tailed arthropods like stick insects.

Terminal velocity and injury

While the righting reflex helps cats land on their feet, their survival also depends on their ability to manage terminal velocity. An average-sized cat with limbs extended achieves a terminal velocity of about 60 mph (97 km/h), which is roughly half that of an average human falling at 120 mph (190 km/h). Their small size, light bone structure, and thick fur contribute to this lower speed. Once they reach maximum velocity, cats often orient their limbs horizontally to distribute the impact more evenly across the body.

Despite these adaptations, falls can still be fatal. A 1987 study of 132 cats at the New York Animal Medical Center found that injuries increased with altitude up to seven stories, after which the rate of injury per cat decreased. However, this trend is debated due to survivorship bias; cats that die instantly from extreme heights are not brought to the vet, skewing the data. A 2003 study of 119 cats concluded that falls from the seventh story or higher are associated with more severe injuries and a higher incidence of thoracic trauma.

When to seek veterinary care

A cat landing on its feet is not a guarantee of safety. High-rise syndrome refers to injuries sustained from falls, and owners should not assume a cat is unharmed just because it landed upright. Signs of serious injury include difficulty breathing, coughing, limping, or lethargy. If a cat has fallen from a significant height, immediate veterinary attention is required to rule out internal bleeding or fractures that are not immediately visible.
