This causes immediate paralysis and death, which is essential for a solitary hunter that cannot afford a prolonged struggle. Compared to other felines, domestic cats have narrowly spaced canine teeth relative to their jaw size, an adaptation specifically for their preferred prey which has small vertebrae.

Once the prey is dead, the cat must process the food. The premolar and first molar on each side of the mouth form a carnassial pair that functions like a pair of scissors. These teeth slide past each other to efficiently shear meat into small pieces. This mechanism is vital because cats have small molars that cannot chew effectively, and they are largely incapable of mastication. Unlike humans, cats do not grind food; they slice it.

Dietary constraints shape the mouth

The shape of the teeth is a direct result of the cat being an obligate carnivore. Their digestive system is adapted to a low-fibre, highly digestible meat diet, and they lack the enzymes to metabolize carbohydrates effectively. Because their diet is mostly devoid of sugar and they do not retain food particles between teeth as humans do, cats generally have better dental health regarding decay. However, the enamel is thicker to withstand the mechanical stress of tearing tough tissue rather than grinding plant matter.

Evolutionary history of the jaw

The skull of the domestic cat is unusual among mammals, featuring very large eye sockets and a powerful, specialized jaw. This anatomy evolved over millions of years, with the genus Felis diverging from other felines around 6 to 7 million years ago. The domestic cat, descended from the African wildcat, retained these predatory features because they were necessary for survival in the wild. Even though domestication occurred around 7500 BCE, the cat has undergone only minor changes in anatomy, remaining capable of surviving in the wild with its original hunting toolkit intact.

Why they do not chew

It is a common misconception that a cat's teeth are dull because they do not chew. The reality is that their teeth are too sharp for chewing; they are designed for a specific mechanical action. The inability to synthesize certain amino acids and vitamins from plant matter means the cat's diet is strictly meat-based. The sharp teeth facilitate this by breaking down protein-rich tissue without the need for the complex grinding motion required by omnivores. This specialization is why a cat's dental health is distinct from that of humans or dogs.
