The slit pupil acts as a mechanical shutter that can close much more tightly than a round pupil, reducing the amount of light hitting the retina to a bare minimum in bright conditions. Cats have a reflective layer behind the retina called the tapetum lucidum and a high density of rod cells, which allows them to see using roughly one-sixth the light humans need. However, these same features make their vision highly sensitive to overexposure; in bright daylight, the slit contracts to a narrow vertical line to protect the retina and prevent the image from washing out.
