This biological constraint limits their color spectrum to shades of blue and yellow, while reds, oranges, and greens appear as muted browns, grays, or dull yellows to them. A bright red ball does not look red to a dog; it looks like a dark, muddy brown that blends easily with brown earth or wooden floors.
This is why a blue tennis ball often seems to "pop" for a dog. The blue cone in their eye is highly sensitive, allowing them to distinguish blue objects against most natural backgrounds. Conversely, a green toy on a green lawn is nearly invisible to them, not because they are blind to green, but because the lack of contrast makes the object blend into the environment.

If the toy is moving, even a color that appears dull to them will become a focal point. The color serves only to make the object detectable in the first place; the motion is what sustains the interest.

When a dog ignores a toy that looks vibrant to you, it is often because the color falls within the red-green spectrum that they cannot distinguish well. A red rubber ring on a brown rug is essentially invisible to a dog, leading them to walk past it or step on it without noticing. This is not a lack of interest in the object itself, but a failure of the visual system to register the object's presence.
Some dogs may also react to the texture or scent of a toy before they even see it, but visual cues are the first filter. If the visual signal is weak due to poor color contrast, the dog may rely entirely on their nose to find the toy, which explains why they might ignore a bright red toy but immediately engage with a blue one that is slightly scented.
Choosing the right toy for visibility
To ensure a dog notices a toy, select colors that fall within their visible spectrum: bright blues, yellows, and light oranges. Avoid reds, oranges, and greens if the toy is intended to be seen from a distance or against natural backgrounds.
