Why do some cats have odd eyes

Why some cats have one blue and one colored eye, the genetics behind the white gene, and the link to deafness in solid white breeds.

One blue eye and one eye that is green, yellow, amber, or brown, a condition known as complete heterochromia. This occurs when a specific gene prevents melanin from developing in one eye while the other retains normal pigment.

The mechanism is genetic, not random. It usually stems from the epistatic white gene, the dominant white gene, or the white spotting gene, all of which can interfere with pigment migration during development. While most common in solid white cats, the trait appears in any coat colour, though it is rare in cats lacking those specific white genes.

The genetics of pigment migration

The odd-eyed look is a result of melanin failing to reach the iris in one eye. The white gene, whether dominant or recessive, or the white spotting gene, can block the pigment cells from migrating to the eye during the kitten's development. This leaves the eye blue due to the lack of melanin, while the other eye develops normally, resulting in green, yellow, amber, or brown.

Approximately 15–40% of solid white cats have one or two blue eyes, and a subset of those will have the odd-eyed configuration. In cats that do not carry the dominant white or white spotting genes, the condition is extremely rare and usually linked to a dominant blue eye gene unrelated to coat colour, such as the gene found in the now-extinct Ojos Azules breed.

It is not a breed-specific trait

Odd-eyed cats are found in all domestic cats and are not linked to a single breed. However, the trait is particularly prized and common in several specific breeds, including the Van cat, Turkish Van, Turkish Angora, Sphynx, Persian, Oriental Shorthair, Japanese Bobtail, and Khao Manee.

In the Japanese Bobtail, odd eyes are most frequently found in calico individuals. The Turkish Angora is another breed where the trait is culturally significant; the Atatürk Forest Farm and Zoo in Ankara maintains a breeding program to preserve these cats, as folklore suggests their eyes should be "as green as the lake and as blue as the sky."

Eye colour changes over time

All cats are born with blue eyes, and the final colour is not set until months later. An odd-eyed kitten may have a different shade of blue in each eye at birth, making the condition difficult to spot immediately. The colour of the odd eye will shift over a period of months, moving from blue to green, or from green to yellow, until it reaches its adult hue.

Deafness is linked to the white gene, not the eyes

A common misconception is that all odd-eyed cats are deaf. This is not true; deafness is linked to the white gene itself, which can cause the degeneration of the cochlea a few days after birth. In solid white cats with one or two blue eyes, the ear on the blue-eyed side may be deaf, while the other usually has normal hearing.

Statistics show that about 10–20% of non-blue-eyed solid white cats are born deaf, while 30–40% of solid white odd-eyed cats are deaf. For solid white cats with two blue eyes, the figure rises to 60–80%. However, cats with odd eyes that lack the white gene, such as solid blue-eyed Foreign White or Ojos Azules cats, are not linked to deafness. Deafness depends on the cat's genotype, not just its appearance.

How flash photography reveals the difference

In flash photographs, odd-eyed cats typically display a red-eye effect in the blue eye but not in the other. This happens because the tapetum lucidum, a reflective layer behind the retina, is present in both eyes. In the non-blue eye, a layer of melanin sits over the tapetum and selectively removes certain colours of light, preventing the red reflection. The blue eye lacks this melanin, allowing the tapetum to reflect the flash light directly back as red.
