The oldest undisputed dog remains, the Erralla dog, date to 17,500 years ago and belong to the Magdalenian culture in Spain. However, disputed remains occur as far back as 36,000 years ago, and the oldest known dog skeletons were found in the Altai Mountains of Siberia and a cave in Belgium, dated to approximately 33,000 years ago. These findings suggest that domestication may have occurred simultaneously in different geographic locations.

By the close of the most recent Ice Age, five ancestral lineages had diversified. These include samples from the Levant, Karelia, Lake Baikal, ancient America, and the New Guinea singing dog. A 2021 literature review implies that domestication began in Siberia between 26,000 and 19,700 years ago by Ancient North Eurasians, before dispersing eastwards into the Americas and westwards across Eurasia.

Why the exact date remains debated

Pinpointing the exact moment of domestication is difficult due to incomplete lineage sorting and post-domestication gene flow. The genetic divergence occurred over a short period, making it hard to date precisely. Additionally, cross-breeding between dogs and wolves has continued since domestication, complicating the genetic record. While the divergence date provides an upper boundary, the actual process of living together likely began later, as evidenced by the gap between the genetic split and the oldest undisputed fossils.

The dog's origin is a complex interplay of climate change, extinction events, and behavioral adaptation. The ancient wolves that gave rise to dogs were likely more robust and specialized for processing carcasses, traits that may have made them more adaptable to the changing environment and the presence of humans.
