The single origin of all domestic cats
All modern domestic cats (Felis catus) descend from a single lineage of the African wildcat, Felis lybica, which belongs to the Felis lineage that diversified 13 to 12 million years ago. While early interactions with humans occurred across a broad geographic range, genetic studies of mitochondrial DNA and microsatellites confirm that the domesticated population emerged specifically from the Near Eastern and North African populations of F. lybica.
Other wildcat subspecies, such as the European wildcat (F. silvestris silvestris) or the Chinese mountain cat (F. silvestris bieti), branched off early and do not contribute to the domestic gene pool. The genetic diversity of domestic cats is highest in the eastern Mediterranean Basin and the Levant, which supports the theory that this region was the epicenter of the first human-cat interactions.
Commensalism, not conquest
The domestication process was protracted and began as a commensal relationship rather than a deliberate human project. As Neolithic farmers established settlements in the Near East around 10,000 years ago, they inadvertently created ideal conditions for wildcats: grain stores attracted mice, and mice attracted wildcats looking for an easy food source.
Unlike dogs, which were actively bred for hunting or guarding, cats were never subject to strong selective breeding for thousands of years. The relationship deepened with the cult of the goddess Bastet. Domestic cats did not reach East Asia until the Tang Dynasty, arriving via the Silk Road around 730 CE. The leopard cat belongs to a different genus (Prionailurus) and generally does not interbreed with domestic cats, highlighting that while the ecological niche for a commensal relationship existed, the specific biological and behavioral traits required for domestication were not present in the leopard cat lineage.
Global spread and modern genetics
